I'm a retired engineer with a lot of years of Fortran and MatLab 
experience. I'm just starting to learn Julia myself. I think that, so long 
as it's scientific/numerical programs that you want to write, Julia is a 
great choice as a first programming language. I do have, however, 2 
caveats:  1. As far as I know, there are no real Beginning Programming 
books using Julia.  2. Right now Julia is changing often as it's developed; 
however I suspect the changes won't affect a beginner's programs too much.
