I guess I am not quite ready to call this closed. Gadfly installed 
successfully without dependency Cairo.  But, of course, Cairo is needed for 
pdf and png output.  

Cairo won't install.  Now it gets stuck trying to install pixman.  Looks 
like a bug in the make file.  I won't bother pasting in the trace; I'll 
report over at Homebrew julia dev as recommended.

Comments about too many dependencies and too much fragility apply.

Julia needs a "native" graphics package (whatever "native" may mean...).
