Maybe this will work for you?

julia> a = "foobarbaz"
"foobarbaz"

julia> b = SubString(a,3,6)
"obar"

julia> typeof(b)
SubString{ASCIIString}

julia> c = ASCIIString(b)
"obar"

julia> typeof(c)
ASCIIString
