Actually, for a developer it's not easier, as he/she needs to write a 
few more lines of code. For you it's definitely easier and 
understandably more comfortable to have is as an extension. To change 
from an "internal plugin" to an external on, aka extension, a little 
work is necessary. Please understand this.

In other words, if you want this so badly why don't you consider having 
your institution pay for it?
