Stefan,

I sincerely hope you will be able to continue to make time for the
project, but everyone eventually moves on. I know the OpenJump
community would miss your contribution and leadership, however, I'm
sure that everyone will join me in wishing you the best in whatever
your career holds for you, even if it means that you won't be able to
contribute to OJ.

On another note, I hope that the introduction of SkyJUMP will not
play a part in any decision that you might make. It certainly wasn't
my intent to steal any of the spotlight from OpenJump. SkyJUMP is
simply my attempt at making our code base available to a wider
audience of developers and users. The decision to not
internationalize SkyJUMP is based on the fact that the requirement
conflicts with our funding line, and the fact that I still consider
OpenJump to be the definitive international version of JUMP. However,
I can't base SkyJUMP on OpenJump, because, like Vividsolutions, our
project requires that we maintain configuration management control. I
hope that everyone understands the fine line that we have to walk in
order to participate in an open source project while using defense
department funds.

There are certainly a lot of exciting developments happening in the
JUMP family of open source GIS lately. It is somewhat analogous to
the Linux distro situation. On one hand, it is confusing to the user
base that now has basically too many choices, but in a period of
experimentation, it is a natural development. In the long run,
standards will emerge.

There always seem to be a good number of developers using OpenJump,
perhaps it is time for a few more of you to step up and take a more
active role in the project. If any of you are government contractors,
like myself, I would welcome your assistance on the SkyJUMP project,
otherwise I would suggest you devote your attention to keeping the
OpenJump project alive, since it remains the best vehicle of JUMP
collaboration.

regards,
Larry Becker
