This is interesting. It sounds like the JPEG 2000 committee didn't know if there were submarine patents, and I wonder if this was stated by the committee as a way to deflect liability.
Is there any opinion on whether there is a danger of the JPEG 2000 format being shot down by a patent claim? Is there a good alternative to the format?
