Paul, This question does not have a simple answer. I'll do my best to provide an explanation.
Vivid Solutions holds the copyright for all of the original JUMP source code. Most code in OpenJUMP that is not part of the original JUMP code is held by the respective programmers or their organizations. This topic came up a year or two ago. I suggested having the copyright on all source code given to the JPP as an organization or to the Free Software Conservancy. At a minimum I suggested tracking the copyright holder on all new contributions. At the time these ideas didn't receive a very warm welcomed. I beleive that the general consensus was that because JUMP was released under the GPL, copyrights didn't really matter. I'm not sure how true this is, but I am not a legal expert in this area. What happens if a programmer adds code to or modifies the code in a class from JUMP? Does the copyright to that portion of the class file remain with the programmer, or does it become Vivid's? If it does belong to the individual programmer we get a real messy situation where even a single class file could have multiple copyright holders. This starts to get pretty messy and a little ridiculous. I still think any code that goes into the "core" should have its copyright granted to a nuetral third party. SS In summary, we don't really have a good idea who holds the copyright to what. :[ On 9/18/07, Paul Austin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Is there a standard copyright header for open jump, who owns the copyright? > > Paul > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------- > This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft > Defy all challenges.
