Hi Michael and Nacho and all

> @Giuseppe : could you install and use SEXTANTE without problem ?

I downloaded the pre-compiled version from here:
http://forge.osor.eu/plugins/wiki/index.php?Downloads&id=13&type=g (sextante
openjump.zip). The procedure to instal Sextante is the same of other plugin.
I use latest OJ nightly build with pirol raster plugin (required by Sextante).
The JRE is 1.6.05. I have installed Skyjump, Kosmo and gvSIg which all poit to
the same JRE (a portable GIS machine).
The Xmax memory in OpenJUMP.bat is allocated to 1024

Small feedback

Vector tool of Sextante
I had no problem with the vector tools: (Tools for lines, tools for points,
tools for Polygons and Tools for vectors on Sextante Toolbox). They seems to me
to work quite fine.

Raster Tools of Sextante
I also tried some raster tools. There are more than 150 and it was impossible
for me to try all.
The basic raster tools seems to work (Menu: basic tools for raster layers) at
least the simplest ones (histogramme etc).
The majority of the other raster tools seems to require more memory than
OpenJUMP can handle: OpenJUMP freezes and sometimes I have java memory error
messages
I just gave some tests on some b/w topographic tiff and jpg maps (not mopre
than 12 Mb, compressed) and the java machine arrived to require even 250 Mb of
used memory (untill OJ stopped to work).

Other impressions/thoughts/projects about Sextante

a) I don't work with rasters, anyhow I feel many of the sextante tools are
developed for specific operation, not for generic GIS operations.
This make a big difference. If the tool structure Sextante can be customized,
it would become more flexible to use it. Anyhow this is a matter of discussion
for Sextante user-list, not OpenJUMP one. More than this: I know few abot
rasters: I downloded Victor's project to an opensource GIS book (actually 177
pages! In spanish) and started to read it in order to understand what can be
considered "generic" and what "specific" (At least I will learn somethig about
rastersd)

b) Sextante inroduced an interesting idea about a "Modeller", similar to the
"Model buider" from ArcGIS: Basically the possibility to create a model of
sequence or processes on layer/layers to run all together. I am quite
interesting to applicate this modeller even to internal OpenJUMP tools. This
will save a lot of time on work

I tested Sextante on a desktop a bit old: AMD Athlon 1.53 Ghz, 465 Mb. I will
test on my newer laptop
Anyhow when I have more details about Sextante and how it works I will open a
page on OJ wiki.

Regards

Peppe
