afaik there are no written rules about it. even if there were, they wouldn't be 
of a great use because the formatting is scattered all over the oj core source.

therefor i generally hack with "show whitespace" characters and use the 
formatting the existing source file is in (tabs,2spaces,4spaces). sometimes i 
reformat a whole method to have it consistent in itself at least and very 
seldom a whole file and this only if there were enough changes to justify that.
i am so careful because changing those makes the actual functional changes hard 
to distinguish in svn diffs and visual compares against svn.

when free to choose i use "2 spaces indention" as this looks reliably identical 
on every platform and is easy to hack even in console editors (e..g. vi).
