I had a deeper look and added a test to the workaround to handle my case : Vista with Windows Classic L&F In this case, UIManager.getLookAndFeel() does not return Windows Classic, but Windows (the L&F set from the box seems to be ignored). So the previous test was preventing icons to be displayed but actual L&F (Classic) can display them.
I can't say I really need it, just like to understand what's wrong, you know what it is...
