jepp,

the -Xmx parameter defines a soft limit only, not the amount of RAM reserved 
initially. so you perfectly safely can -Xmx16G (jre64 ;) on a machine with only 
2GB RAM, as the result will be the same anyway, when the RAM is full the jre 
won't get any more RAM and either die or complain.
