Sounds like an idea whose time has come. With GDAL support (in the MAXI release) it would be possible to integrate the GUI tool from SkyJUMP that uses ogr2ogr to to load any supported file format while reprojecting the coordinate system. See the attached screen shot. The main feature is the exhaustive drop down list of coordinate systems that can be reduced by typing a key word.
