Nice idea.
I already used such feature to compute borders with PostGIS.
Now possible in OpenJUMP with multipleRingBuffer.
(as the previous version, it still loose attributes though)
Maybe interesting to test it with Larry's 5 color plugin.

I can see no reason to prevent negative buffers. I'll have a look.
I also noticed that the plugin often throws TopologyExceptions...
