Hi, this feature was gone between OJ 1.8.0 and 1.9.0. In 1.8.0 the exact behavior was the following: -load two layers -select one layer -activate the selection tool -click in the map Now objects on many layers are selected. This is the default. Now press and release the <Ctrl> key once and OJ 1.8.0 switches to a single layer selection mode. With the <Shift> key you can switch back.
The change was made in revision 4452 at 17 May 2015 by Michaël. It would be nice if we get this back into the CORE edition, because the PLUS edition is too much for some users.
