further research seems to indicate that 1. the WMS server does not advertise a _https_ but a plain _http_ url 2. trying to connect to it reveals that this url redirects via status 302 (temporarily moved) to the _https_ location again 3. this probably fails because of https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1884230/httpurlconnection-doesnt-follow-redirect-from-http-to-https
