So, my challenge is keeping the price point is something around $1000-$1500 -
basically the 10Gb version of a 1u gigE capture system.
If Linux is OK take a look at the PF_RING socket, used in the open
source solution ntop and in the hardware appliances they build, but
available in the current Linux kernel. Take a look at
http://www.ntop.org/products/pf_ring/
And to the links from there. They studied the subject in great depth,
including the NIC driver architecture.
