Two reasons:
a) Make BGP distance the same.
b) Make BGP distance greater than any IGP (bad
things could happen if your traffic is taking an
eBGP path rather than you IGP).
I do the Routing workshops with Philip Smith and this is
standard BCP for BGP on IOS:
