It is really easy to install/run. We run a single cloud controller for all our clients on UniFi V3, current version works great.
Installed on Debian 7 without issues at all. I wrote up a quick guide: http://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi/Does-the-UniFi-controller-have-to-be-installed-on-site/m-p/497883#M40243 There is no hack it is fully documented by UniFi in the wiki, upgrading is a simple matter of apt-get update && apt-get upgrade, easier than Windows (and more reliable).
