A core switch does not have to be a monster. It can be any capable device (mostly from a port bandwidth perspective) provided you deploy two. On the cheap end, I like the Juniper EX4550 and EX4600. On the Cisco side, the 4500-X is also nice. These are cheap, 1U switches with multi-rate 1Gbps/10Gbps ports. Ideal for cheap core switching. If you have a few ports left on your core routers, and you can spare some small cash for these switches, I'd rather do that. Price them up, you might be surprised.
