The data syncing happens over comm messages with a very simple syncing
protocol. Our protocol is documented at
https://github.com/jupyter-widgets/ipywidgets/blob/master/packages/schema/messages.md#widget-messaging-protocol-version-2
(version
2 is implemented in ipywidgets 7).
