Hi pjd, No there is currently no simple way to get footnotes, in the notebook you should be able to use raw html, and use some javascript extensions but it is not guaranteed to work with all the tools that support notebooks. I am not aware of short time plans to integrate footnotes, though the jupyterlab with google drive integration allow to attach comments like google docs to notebooks.
