I wasn't able to do anything brilliant this year for
April Fool's day but maybe I can make up for it next year.

Last year, I downloaded the stock IPhone sounds and
selected the boing sound you hear when new mail arrives.

I wrote a loop that played the sound every few minutes
and fed it in to our stereo. Beverly kept checking her IPhone
the first couple of times and then caught on and asked me if I
was doing something.

I had to admit the truth.

I had even made the loop such that it paused for an hour
or so before it started making the noise so we had time to eat
and Beverly wouldn't associate anything I did with the creation
of the sounds but the sound is really too good coming out of the
stereo and it just doesn't sound quite right so she was
a bit suspicious from the start.

One year, I laid a small Solar pannel on top our
refrigerator and aimed it at the overhead light. I connected the
pannel to the kind of sounder you find on smoke alarms and the
like. When she got up and switched on the kitchen light, it was
immediately accompanied by a loud whistle modulated by a 120
hertz note because fluorescent lamps actually flicker off and on
at twice the power line frequency. It was a weird sound and Bev
was not too happy when I pointed out the extra technology I had
introduced to honor the day.

The work place is also a fertile playground on the first
of April. I've gotten a couple of good ones in there, also. My
belief is that the joke must not be destructive or
mean-spirited. Work can sometimes be all of that by itself
without any help from me.
