Tomato juice works somewhat but, as you said, time takes care of
it after awhile.

We had a golden retriever back in the eighties who
tangled with a skunk. We weren't at home when it happened but
our house smelled so bad when we got back that we didn't realize
that much of that smell was the dog.

Beverly bought a large can of the cheapest tomato juice
you could get and bathed the dog in that and it did a lot of
good but it didn't get rid of all of it.

There is actually a science-based concoction you can mix
together that breaks down the active chemical in skunk spray and
neutralizes it. The recipe is on the internet and it doesn't
require anything exotic but it was the result of some research
actually done in to the chemistry of skunk musk.

There are some old classic cartoons featuring a French skunk
who is always falling in love with cats who look like skunks
and, of course, it never works out for him. I think his name is
Pepi La Pu.

For those not from North America, when you read books or
hear references to pole cats, it is possible that someone is
referring to skunks.
