Happy Autumn to you, also. I was working on a message to
post to the list but hadn't sent it yet so here it is.

We were watching "CBS Sunday Morning" last Sunday and
they were Harold ing the new season and one of the things was a
survey given to a bunch of people about what was their favorite
season and Fall or Autumn won by a small margin.

The best weather of the whole year is just around the
corner except for the occasional tornado or giant grass fire
when things get a bit dry, but over all, it is like Heaven.

I am so glad we have seasons, here. I would miss them if
we lived somewhere tropical.

Oklahoma usually has enough freezing weather to kill off
the bumper crop of bugs we get during Summer so it's bye-bye
soon to flies, wasps and mosquitos who don't know it yet, but
their days are numbered.

Places like Houston in Texas and South Florida don't hardly
ever freeze and I hear they've got cockroaches that could eat a
bus full of people in a couple of bites.

Of course I am exaggerating a bit, but they've got some
giant ones, there.

One interesting bit of Fall trivia is that North America
is one of the few places on Earth with Autumn colors. China is
another such place, I think, but the leaves in many other parts
just turn brown and drop.

The reason for the colors is that the chlorophyl goes
away from the leaves when the Sunlight shines less on the
shortening days. The trees that loose their leaves can't
generate food any longer due to less light so they send a
chemical signal in their sap to sever all the leaf connections.

The amount of red in a leaf is determined by how much
sugar was in the leaf at the time of the shutdown signal. Lots
of sugar makes for very red leaves. Less sugar causes colors
ranging from orange to yellow to almost white.

In about a month, we will be crunching over Mother
Nature's discarded Solar panels. The colors come from just the
right combination of cool nights and warm, dry sunny days.

Fall is also the time for chile and soup and we will be
anticipating Thanksgiving and Christmas. Lots of things to look
forward to.
