That's probably a good idea. Yesterday at work, I was on
the phone and stood up which caused a spark to go right through
the plastic of the hand set in to my thumb. It was a really good
spark, the kind that adds a little ache to the sting. The phone
still kept working but that was quite a wallup. We think of
non-metallic substances like glass, plastic and air as
non-conductive and that is quite true until you reach a voltage
that is called the dielectric constant. That varies with
whatever substance is separating you from the juice, but it is
usually really high. When you reach that potential, the
electricity goes through and you get a spark. That is what
lightning is. The voltage between the ground and clouds goes up
in to the hundreds of millions of volts and finally, the air,
itself breaks down and conducts during the lightning strike. The
only difference between lightning and thunder and the snaps you
hear when taking off a sweater is magnitude.

        There's today's science lesson.
