     Happy New Year to you also :-).

     I'm still not sure what directory you're using!  Are you using
openldap (==slapd) or Novell's (NetIQ) eDirectory?

     I'm not a linux expert, so I'm not sure which directory Novell
use on SUSE by default :-).

    JX does try to search for the root(s) DNs of a directory when it
first connects, but config branches can be handled a bit differently
by a directory; I'm not 100% sure how to access a cn=config branch...
I've just tried it with a recent version of openldap by entering it as
the basedn for connection without much luck.

    I *think* that in openldap you need to set up access to the
cn=config branch separately; possibly the following link may help:
