Like, 1960s? Or do you mean more modern email in the 90s? I get why people top post, it's quick and easy. And as threads get longer, the reply is ready to find. But conversely, coming into the middle of a thread it is painful to deal with top posting. It's more annoying in newsgroups than anything.
