Thanks. No it's not the gmail app but has a icon that looks similar. A white envelope with a red circle in the middle with a white @ in it.
In the galaxy I have deleted in from Application Manager under Downloadsand stopped it in running Services. It is now not showing the icon in those areas but still on the Home Screen although seems not to be downloading mail, although K-9 still is. Any ideas how to get it off the screen altogether please?
