You can ask to show only 100 messages, or last 3 months. What sux to me.

I have also found that even with those limitations, fetch will lag 
depending on total message count in the folder; that's why every year I 
move non archived emails in a subfolder of Inbox. To stay below 300 
messages in inbox. Even when limiting fetch to last 10 or 100 messages, 
fetch is faster for me when inbox contains less than 50 messages (compared 
to ... 5000 for example).
