I don't know about K9 in particular, but, from personnal experience on 
Thunderbird:
- delete in cache (action will be performed on next sync)
- move to trash (in cache)

- perform action NOW (sync immediately)

- mark as deleted
- remove message from folder (expunge)

so ... many things can happen with Imap :)
