Another possible cause is a problem at the host. I manage several email accounts hosted via Bluehost and managed through CPanel. One account on the same domain was allowed to fill up to its quota. When that happened, my account in the same domain started throwing these errors in K-9 (550 Send Verify error message would appear briefly).
Resolving the over-limit account and clearing my Outbox of all pending messages seems to have to worked. Keep in mind the offending account was not the one associated to K-9, but another account on the same domain. If I wasn't the admin, I would not have known this.
