It's generally not whether or not the provider uses secure SMTP or not. Many 
providers don't allow sending to their SMTP server when not on their network 
without authentication. It's the authentication bit that's most relevant, 
secure or not.


But also, some providers block outbound standard ports. This is all to combat 
viruses and spam.
