I've wondered about this too. There's the size of pulling down the message, the size of polling, and the size of connecting for push. What I do is set the few folders I want to pay attention to to "1st class" and leave the other 100 (mailing list targets) as default. Then I set "poll folders" and "push folders" to "1st class". I also have turned off "poll when connecting for push" to off (in advanced). And poll frequency to never. This seems to keep data fairly low and also get me mail notifications promptly. But if you set push to none, and only hit refresh when on wifi, usually, you should go even lower. I'd like to see an option for "poll when connecting for push" to be "when on wifi". I'm not sure that's rational; I haven't measured bytes for poll. The problem with what I do is that I have messages on the phone that are gone on the server because the phone doesn't....
