PROBLEM SOLVED! All my email accounts in K9 were adjusted to save email attachments on the SD card. I remembered that in Android 4.4.2 (without root) many applications had difficulties in using the SD card (e.g. Myphone explorer, Total commander and many others). This adjustment was a "left-over" from my older smartphone where the internal memory was very tiny.
After switching the storage location back to internal memory, no problems have occured any more! K9 does not hang up and all my 500 emails per account remain properly in K9... What a relief!
