As of late April 23 or early April 24, several issues began occurring with 
K9 Mail, without having made any changes to K9. 

#1 Adding email address to reply, causes app to drop message and return to 
previous mail folder view.
#2 Opening certain (but not all) IMAP emails, dumps the app back to the 
folder list view and triggers the app to start polling all accounts and 
subscribed IMAP folders. 
#3 Enter an email address in creating a new account, drops back to the 
default initial view -- inbox, unified inbox, etc.
#4 Sending email drops back to inbox or closes app. Sent email is left in 
Outbox. 

No new apps were installed around this date, however I did a manual update 
to K9.

In addition the following apps were automatically updated:

Amazon Music (v4.4.4 updated April 24, 2015)
Android System WebView (Google) (v42.0.2311.129 updated April 24, 2015)
Flipboard (v3.2.3 updated April 24, 2015)
Messenger (Facebook) (v26.0.0.20.13 updated April 24, 2015)
Flixster (v7.1.1 updated April 24, 2015)
Dropbox (v2.5.0.4 updated April 23, 2015)
Google Slides (v1.2.152.17.35 updated April 23, 2015)
LastPass Password Manager ( v3.4.14 updated April 23, 2015)
Verizon FIOS Mobile (v3.6.5 updated on April 23, 2105)
Adobe Acrobat (v15.0.1 updated April 22, 2015)
Chrome Browser (v42.0.2311.109 updated April 22, 2015)
Google Play Newsstand (v3.4.0 updated April 22, 2015)
Scrabble (v 3.8.1.691326 updated on April 22, 2015)

I uninstalled K9 Mail

Next, I disabled the following apps and rebooted the phone:

Newsstand
Acrobat
Verizon FIOS Mobile
Google Slides
Flixster
Messenger (Facebook)
Flipboard
Amazon Music

After rebooting, I reinstalled K9 and recreated two (of four) IMAP accounts.

Issues appear to have resolved.

I began re-enabling apps one at a time in the sequence below, rebooting 
phone as each was added, and then retrying above functions.

Verizon FIOS Mobile
Amazon Music
Messenger (Facebook) 

Everything still appeared okay at this point.

I added back the other two additional IMAP accounts, making four accounts 
total. Again, rebooting the phone after each add.

Problem #4 re-appeared.

What I cannot recall at this point, is if the updates between April 22 and 
April 24 were part of the issue or incidental to it, as during that same 
time I did a manual update to the latest version of K9.

HTC One M8 (HTC6525LVW)
Verizon service
Android v 5.0.1
HTC Sense v 6.0
K-9 Mail v 5.004

Any suggestions at this point? I've been using K-9 for many years now and 
this is the first time I've encountered multiple odd problems after an 
update.
