Problem solved.

I found a report of a similar problem at
https://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=6152
Although in my case I am using IMAP rather than POP3, I figured it couldn't
hurt to delete local data and let it re-download, and now I have my
notifications back again.
