IMAP? Were you by any chance composing a message? with large attachment? when this happened?
That's what happened to me, I was composing a message with several photos, on and off, writing a little, etc etc. Later, I discovered I chewed up trough all my carefully conserved data, all gone... What the??? Then it downed at me, my partially composed message, plus attachments, was being saved and re saved... Doooh... A trap for the younger players..
