K-9 Mail does not sync when opening a folder. It does however display a
spinning progress indicator while loading messages from internal
storage. Depending on many factors (including the size of your message
database and your device's storage speed) this can take a while.

The folder list screen displays when a specific folder has last been
synchronized with the server.

The background service is only running during synchronization or when
Push (IMAP IDLE) is enabled.
