Your "hasn't been able to download" comment is a bit nebulous. K-9 is network/connectivity agnostic, and I believe the current version should work on any Android release from 4.0.3 or above (see the release notes, <https://github.com/k9mail/k-9/wiki/ReleaseNotes> for more specifics) -- though I haven't heard reports about Android-6 (which his device won't have) yet. He should just go to the Apps tab of his "Google Play" app and search for "K-9 mail". It should show up as the first item or two. If it doesn't, then there's a compatibility issue and we'll need more technical specifics about his device. If it shows, he should be able to install it from there.
