With K9 5.107 (the beta channel), selecting "Save attachments to"
results in a display of the filesystem - relative to the currently
set (save attachments to) location. There is a "<-" arrow at the
upper left that lets you move up in the filesystem hierarchy.
There's also a "+" on the upper right that lets you create a new
directory. You can select a directory anywhere there -- assuming you
write to it.

Whatever I end up selecting is the final path saved. There is only
one path in the end.

I think you may have been adding directories -- so try the "<-" to
go to the top and start over. When I do that, with a device that has
an SDcard, it shows:

   0
   /storage/extSdCard

Start there and traverse down to a reasonable location. When I
select the download directory,

  /storage/emulated/0/Download

shows as the "Save attachments to..." location.
