It sounds like your (system level) "long press delay" is high and you're not holding long enough to get it. You can adjust this under your device's [system] settings/accessibility. On my samsung device running their overlay on android 5.1.1 it's "press and hold delay" under "dexterity and interaction" (under accessibility).
