Paul, 

We have an open issue for improving the behaviour of K9 and external storage.

As to when it gets done, that's dependent on there being a developer who has a 
device to test on and considers it more important than the many other issues. 

As my Nexus doesn't have an SD card it's not something I can actually do much 
about.
