I am seeing this too, or something similar, on CM 12.1 (5.1). The usual behavior is that I click download or open (when a 1-3MB picture isn't loaded) and then nothing happens for a long time (20s?). I hit back and then the preview is there and I can open. It feels like the download finished but the notification to the other thread got lost.
