Hi,

I'm using K9 Mail on a Xiaomi Redmi Note 2. I've been having this issue
with K9 since day 1, but unfortunately I only discovered this forum today.

I have been having issues with background sync. As far as I can figure out,
the sync service is auto stopped from polling and receiving push
notifications once the main app GUI is closed.

If I don't open my K9 app, I don't get any notifications at all, even for
days or weeks on end (basically indefinitely, as far as I can tell). This
is despite me having processed emails using my computer, so I know clearly
that I have had new emails. Then the moment I open the K9 main app GUI, I
see that the emails contained within are still outdated as of the last time
the K9 app was opened, whilst the account statuses immediately turn to
"polling". Thereafter, the old emails just get polled in altogether.

This was not an issue in my previous phones. I have used K9 on my old Redmi
Note 3G, Asus Zenfone 2. They always synced fine in the background.

This is also not an issue with other apps. My Skype, Whatsapp, Telegram,
Gmail push services are all running fine even when I manually end the GUI
processes from running. I have to manually end their services to stop them
from giving any notifications.

*Attempted fixes:*

1. I have tried locking the K9 main app GUI from being autoclosed by Miui
since the first day, i.e. by opening the running apps tray and dragging the
K9 icon down so it shows a red lock icon. However, this has not worked yet.
It appears that the syncing function is entirely delegated to the service,
and keeping the K9 GUI open whilst the service is stopped does nothing for
its polling/syncing function.

2. I have tried giving autostart permission to my K9 app. This has not
helped. The email doesn't even update when I restart my phone, but only
when I open the K9 app.

3. I have tried looking under any battery saving options / battery profile
settings. I have looked in Miui's native "Security" app's "Battery" option.
All my battery saver profiles are set to "off". I have tried looking in
settings. I can't find anything related to this.

4. I have tried looking in permissions. My K9 has 3 permissions, "Modify
and delete contacts", "Read your contacts" and "Send MMS messages". The
first 2 options are enabled. The last option is set to "Ask". In any case,
I have never gotten any permission requests. There seems to be nothing
related to the push and polling functions not working in the background.

Miui 7.2.3.0 is running Android Lollipop 5.0.2 LRX22G.

Any of you have any fixes for this? It's been so long I've started ignoring
checking emails on my phone. I wish to be notified of new emails on the go
again.

Thanks!
