After a bit more investigation I've found the problem only occurs with 
links in unnumbered lists <ul> elements where they do not have a list 
element <li>

So for example, in K9 5.202 this will not display the clickable link
   <ul> <a href = " ... ">link does not show up</a> </ul>
but this will work
   <ul> <li> <a href=" ... "> link text </a> </ul>

This could be considered bad formatting of the source email and I will 
raise it with the sender.
Although it does display correctly with Squirrel Mail (webmail client) and 
presumable others and it used to display until recently (5.2 ?).
