In K9, mail smtp server has both an ipv6 and ipv4 address. However, some
places I am, I get an ipv6 address but it can't reach the i[pv6 address on
my server, almost certainly a firewall issue. However, K9mail doesn't
retry the ipv4 address! It waits until I've left the location or gotten
back on the 3g/4g network before retrying to send the mail over another
network transport.

Interestingly, it does not do this for the incoming IMAP connection, it
connects just fine to the IMAP server on ipv4 despite it also having an
ipv6 address. It's like the SMTP and IMAP are using slightly different
lower level protocols stacks to open the underlying tcp connections.
