Thanks for fast responses.
  Gunter, I was not aware that FIREFOX or any other browser had this config 
setting.  Only config I know of is Default Browser setting, which if not 
set will prompt whether to open in browser flavor (FireFox, Chrome, 
DuckDuckGo, etc.)  Just Once or Always.

   Andy, I am not having a problem with K-9 opening a browser.

The previous behavior was that while still in K-9, a prompt would show up 
asking if I wanted to go to the browser or not immediately after clicking a 
link.  I chose not to, I open a few more emails opening more links, then go 
to the browser where I would see the multiple tabs for each of the links 
that I clicked on.
