I have *exactly* this same problem, not on Vodafone network.
I'm using my phone in either Wifi+VPN setup, or 3/4G+VPN setup. The VPN
always succeeds, be it through Wifi or 3/4G. On Wifi, K9 does not have
any kind of problem. With 3/4G, sometimes everything works ok with K9,
other times all K9 to Dovecot connections fail.

The Dovecot logs, if I remember properly, show the failed connections
are made *without* account/password. I will search our archives for the
data if anyone is interested.
