  * IMAP means you view your e-mails on the server - which is great if
    you have more than one device or more than one program as all your
    devices and program will share the same Mails.
  * pop3 means that by default all mails you download for viewing are by
    default automatically deleted from the server. This was handy in the
    days server storage was expensive and no-one had more than one
    computer. You can tell pop3 not to automatically delete read mail
    from the server. But you might have to do so both on thunderbird and
    K9: I don't know if any of these programs defaults to deleting mails
    after download.
