Igor: Using the VSN is fine, even if it's changable. One problem, though: if I start Kaboodle on a PC with a network card, let it discover the LAN, then shut it down and start it up again on that PC with the network card not attached, it hangs up. If I start it for the first time, with a new registry, it uses the VSN number and is fine. Thanks for looking into this.
